Technology is a critical success factor for any affiliate marketing home-based business, but often beginning internet marketers don’t have a good understanding of what kind of technology is necessary or how it will impact their company.
The following ten tips ought to help you get properly launched. Whenever possible, try to establish processes and systems that integrate seamlessly, and are up all of the time to care for patrons and prospects.
Build a computerized system if you want to make your day-to-day existence uncomplicated and your wallet full.
1. Computer & Peripherals
If you want to do affiliate marketing, you’ll clearly need a computer of some sort - hopefully one that you own, either a standard computer or a laptop. Purchase one with a lot of memory and processing speed. A broadband internet connection is better than dial-up. You’ll also want a printer. If you can, get both with wireless capabilities.
2. Your Custom Domain Name
Be sure to buy a website name that belongs to you, so that you can commence~start} to develop your own brand name. Further, many providers won’t permit you to include affiliate links, or even subdomains, but only a website name that you own. A sound website name will be succinct (30 characters or less), sensible to the eye and the ear, and reflective of your product or service. The best names end in “.com” and those are ideal for most online marketing companies, if obtainable.
3. Telecommunications
Another key tool is telecommunications, including an Internet Service Provider and a telephone - either land-line, cellular, or VOIP, with or without headset. It should have both local and long distance features, and if you plan to hold teleconferences for your downline, the ability to handle conference calls. If you’re going to do teleseminars, etc., you’ll almost certainly want to invest in a teleconferencing service that can handle many, perhaps hundreds or even a thousand, calls simultaneously.
4. Hosting Services
You’ll want a web host to serve as a “home” for your website. There are many web hosting companies on hand to meet the needs of home businesses and internet businesses. Their services do differ somewhat, as do their prices, so be sure to shop around before making a purchase.
5. Systems & Info Precautions
You’ll also require robust security for your software and information. This can take the form of physical security, plus programs such as firewalls, and security applications like McAfee or Norton.
6. Data & Systems Backup/Restore Programs
Another necessity is for backup of your locally resident systems and info. Despite the best security programs you might be able to implement, there will probably come a circumstance when you experience a system crash, with either partial or complete loss of info and required systems. So you will also have to have a robust backup and restore capability.
7. Products
You’ll want one or more products to sell - products that you have developed yourself, or ones that have been created by other people. If you provide your custom created goods, then you’ll also have to worry about maintaining appropriate inventories, performing upgrades, handling returns, etc. If you get your products from other vendors, then you’ll have to worry about maintaining the relations with those vendors, order fulfillments, customers are satisfied and receivables and collections.
8. Affiliate Program Network
If you’re planning to advertise several affiliate products, you’ll almost certainly also want to participate with one or more Affilate Program Networks (APNs), such as ClickBank, Commission Junction, or LinkShare, etc. to handle your commissions, sales statistics, and other back office functions for you.
9. Web 2.0 Capabilities
The Web is constantly changing, so if you want to succeed in today’s online world, you’ll want sites and services that support blogging and interactive communities (i.e., ones that use Web 2.0 to support a whole host of collaboration, using the web as the network platform).
10. Technical Support
Finally - another frequently overlooked necessity - is the need for excellent technical support - for both your local hardware and software, but even more importantly, for any of your customer-facing websites and product systems.
If these go down and you are not able to get swift technical support from any/all your vendors, the resultant downtime can impact your marketing campaigns, you can lose or upset potential customers, and ultimately, your profits will suffer (and your brand, as well).
Technology is the lifeblood of an online marketing business, and Murphy’s Law being what it is, you must to get ready for the ultimate downtime and computer crashes that take place as well. Using all these necessary technologies will help the success of your online business.
